Message From the Pastor
Welcome to the Ministry page of Carteret Street United Methodist Church. Carteret Street is located in beautiful Beaufort, South Carolina. Beaufort is a coastal town with a rich history in the Lowcountry. The Methodists people have a history in the Beaufort area. There is a marker at the site of our sanctuary, which marks a visit of John Wesley on December 7, 1737.
The history of the church states, in 1736 the Reverend John Wesley came to Savannah as a Priest of The Church of England. His brother, Charles Wesley, came with him to be the secretary to General Oglethorpe, Georgia’s Governor. Charles’ stay in America lasted only six months when he went to Charleston to embark on the trip back to England. John accompanied him and en-route they reached Port Royal Island on July 28, 1736 and spent the night. This was the first of John Wesley’s three visits to the Beaufort are but the only visit of Charles.
John Wesley began his journey back to England the following year. With three friends he crossed the Savannah River and walked to Beaufort arriving December 7, 1737 where Wesley was the guest of the Reverend Lewis Jones, Rector of St. Helena Episcopal Church. In December 1882 plans were made to organize what is now Carteret Street United Methodist Church. In December 1884 the Reverend H. M. Mood was appointed pastor of the Carteret Street Methodist Church.
