Biographies

Rev. Susan Ulmer, a native of Columbia, South Carolina, was appointed to Carteret Street United Methodist Church on June 14, 2006, having previously served Shandon United Methodist Church (Columbia), St. Paul United Methodist Church (St. Matthews), Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church (Calhoun County) and as the Columbia District Superintendent. She is a graduate of the University of South Carolina and Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary. She enjoys biking, water activities, camping, reading, travel, cooking and gardening.

Lara Byrd graduated from the College of Charleston with a BA in Religious Studies and Candler School of Theology with a Master of Divinity. Carteret Street United Methodist Church is her first appointment since graduating from seminary. Lara married Russell in December 2003. Lara is originally from Charleston but loves the salty air and laid back lifestyle of Beaufort. Lara and Russell have a yellow lab, Ellie Mae. Lara began her ministry at Carteret Street United Methodist Church in 2004.

Cynthia Chapman moved to Beaufort in 1973 when she married her husband, Chuck. In 1975 Carteret Street UMC was without and organist and Kay Tisdale Crosby asked her to fill in…She’s been here ever since! She has a Bachelor of Music Education degree with her proficiency in organ. In addition to being an organist, Cynthia also directs the youth and children’s choirs at Carteret Street UMC. In her “spare” time she teaches music at Laurel Bay Primary School! Cynthia has two daughters and two grandchildren.

Donnie Beer has been a member of Carteret St. UMC since moving to Beaufort in 1970. For the past 11 years, Donnie has served on city council. She is the owner of a wedding and event planning business, Amenities Southern Style, Ltd. She is editor of the church newsletter, The Courier. She was treasurer of Carteret St. UMC for the past six years.

Kay Kaigler Tisdale Crosby moved to Beaufort in 1968 from Columbia, SC with her late husband Tommy Tisdale. She attended Winthrop University and graduated from Columbia College as a Voice Major. She taught piano for many years and in 1971 she joined Carteret Street UMC as a temporary choir director and has been here ever since. She has been employed at MCCS Parris Island for the past 18 years. She is now married to John Crosby, a retired teacher. Kay is the director of the Chancel Choir and the Carillon Handbell Choir.

Ellen Fabian is the Church Secretary at Carteret Street. She married her husband Jimmy in April 2001. They have one son named James. Ellen is a native of Beaufort and graduated from Beaufort High School in 1995. She graduated College from USC Beaufort in December 2000. She received a Bachelor of Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies with an emphasis in Psychology and Business.

Kent Easty is the Business Manager at Carteret Street. He is retired Air Force. He is married to Joan and they have three children and two grandchildren. In Kent’s spare time he referee’s for swim meets around the United States.

Will Chisolm is the Custodian at Carteret Street UMC. He is an Army National Guard Reservist. He married his wife, Cherese, in 1993 and they have two children. He is a native of Beaufort and graduated from Beaufort High.
